7 Ways to Manage Anxiety in Unchartered Territory

The one thing that we can count on in life is change;  yet, so many of us fear and resist it. Anxiety comes from a fear of the unknown – we want to control what we think is going to happen even though we have no way of foreseeing the future.

How do we manage anxiety when dealing with change?  To manage our fears about the future, we need to find ways to stay in the present. It sounds so easy to say “just focus on where you are right now;” however, we live in a fast-paced, multi-tasking world, and this skill takes practice.

Here are 7 ways to help manage your inner world when you begin that journey into uncharted territory:

  1. Breathe! Again, it sounds so simple, but remembering to breathe is incredibly important. Set a reminder on your phone to take a minute and focus on your breath. Inhale to the count of 5, exhale to the count of 6. There are also some great apps, including Calm, Headspace, and Stop, Breathe, & Think, if you are looking for additional support.

  2. Take time away from the changes. Spend time doing the things that you like to do instead of the things that you need to do.

  3.  Talk about your fears, thoughts, and feelings, even if they seem silly or unfounded.  When we allow thoughts to circle around in our head, they gather speed and take on a life of their own.  Have you ever thought something, said it out loud, and realized it sounded different in your head? Putting your thoughts out into the world, whether through writing or by talking to someone, can often help you clear your mind.

  4. Write down your to-do list and prioritize. When our lists get long in our heads, we start to feel overwhelmed. Get it out and onto paper (or into your computer/phone).

  5. Remind yourself that someday you will look back at the situation and see it differently.

  6. Move your body! Exercise not only releases endorphins that relieve anxiety, but it also gives us an opportunity to reflect on changes and see things in a new light.

  7. Find the silver lining. Even though some situations may seem entirely negative, there is always something meaningful that we can learn from change.
